Sky

Since the beginning of mankind, people are obsessed about the ability to fly. Surely Mercator’s wildest imagination was to be able to fly over the world to draw his maps of this blue planet. Ever since, we invented all kinds of possibilities that comes quite close. Ballooning, helicopters, skydiving and paragliding are all ways to experience the ultimate feeling of freedom. Astonishing flights over the ancient South African land marks make you realize that we are just merely a fraction of a world much bigger than us human beings, especially if you come across a pot of Humpback Whales breaching alongside massive cliffs. If you really want to feel the wind in your hair whilst floating above the most beautiful city in the world, you should jump out of a plane for a 30 second free fall with Table Mountain in the background. You might as well scratch the most popular bucket list item while you’re at it.

Paragliding will help you connect with what nature provides and will open your lungs. You need to read the convection and wind to glide in the sky for as long as possible. The best conditions are when it is hot but not too windy.

In summer-time, the Western Cape brings a strong South Easter wind which is a thermic wind created by the cold temperature of the South Atlantic Ocean and the heated surface of the Cape Flats. The wind is reinforced because of the ‘Venturi effect’ (funnel effect) created by the mountains of the Cape Peninsula and the hills / mountains of the main land. Travelling East towards KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg, the wind gradually decreases. Summers are typed as low wind regions and warm temperatures. It is a pleasant summer feel as the humidity is not very high.

In winter-time, the Western Cape’s temperature difference between water and air is much lower. There is less convection, but the use of orographic winds along the flanks of the hills or mountains can co-operate with the paragliding pilot to give you a decent ride. At the East coast of South Africa, the water temperature increases significantly as the Indian Ocean is averagely 24°C. The subtropical climate results in a smaller fluctuation in air temperatures between summer and winter. In Johannesburg differences between day and night, summer and winter are bigger as the ocean doesn’t influence the pleasant temperature.
